Church History

This may be an engraving of the Church in Crabbe’s day. If you look carefully you can see the Royal Arms above the Bailiff’s Gallery, the pulpit and the font by the pillars, and the box pews.
In 1840 the Royal Arms are removed to Moot Hall; they return to the church in 1942, and are repaired and cleaned in 1997
1735 a gallery is made for musicians. It’s now the ringing chamber above the west door.

From the late 1700s to the early 1800s there is a century of neglect
The fishing industry fails, the sea floods the town, there are few changes in church
But some time after 1806 the Bailiff’s Gallery is removed and new things happen in the church once more.
These are possibly some remains of rood loft
for the bells sound out the joy of the Lord
