Church History

But what of Thomas Johnson who did such damage?

He was appointed by Fairfax to found trained bands, and became Captain of 100 dragoons to be raised in Suffolk.   In 1650 he was ordered to take a census of arms.

In 1651 he assigned Priors Hill and Marshes to the town Bailiffs.

He is buried in the church -

we walk over him when we come up to receive communion.

Soldiers are given 10/- beer money at his funeral (50p today)

and in 1660, two years after his death, the Royal Arms are placed centrally on the Chancel Arch above the Bailiff’s Gallery which ran across it.
