and rest awhile

Canon Arthur Phelps

Arthur was born in Twickenham and started training as an accountant.   He was in the Royal Navy in the Fleet Air Arm as an Observer/Air Traffic control from 1944-46.   He went up to Cambridge University (St.
Catherine’s and Ridley Hall) 1948-53 and was Ordained in Liverpool the Sunday after the Queen’s Coronation.   He was curate of St. Lawrence, Kirkdale from 1953 to 1956.  He married in 1956.  He was Curate of Rainham in Essex from 1956-1960 in charge of St. John’s South Hornchurch.  He was Minister, later Vicar, of St. James, Collier row in Romford 1960-75; Rector of Thorpe Morieux, Brettenham and Preston St. Mary 1975-83; Rector of Rattlesden, Thorpe Morieux and Brettenham 1984-90.   Arthur says he enjoys meeting people, talking with them and exchanging experiences.   His hobbies are Family History, stamp collecting and Sudoku.
The Revd. Prebendary Derek J. Johnson

Derek trained for the ministry at St. Aidan’s College, Birkenhead, and spent his entire ministry in the Diocese of Lichfield.    He was curate of Holy Trinity Eccleshall, Sub Rector of St. Mary’s Stafford, and then for almost twenty two years full-time Chaplain at New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton.  Derek retired to Aldeburgh in 1996, is still active and likely to be found “on tour” on Sundays assisting in Saxmundham Deanery and occasionally beyond it.
