Nicky was born in Enfield, Middlesex, and after studying for a degree in economics
at the University of Durham took a post-graduate diploma in hotel management at Manchester
Polytechnic. She worked for the hotel chain THF in London, training at the Hyde Park
Hotel and winning a travel scholarship to study at the hotel school at Cornell University
in New York. On returning to London, Nicky worked as executive club manager at Grosvenor
House in Park Lane. In 1984 she went into partnership with her parents, moved
to Aldeburgh and bought the Uplands Hotel where the family spent 14 happy years.
On withdrawing from the hotel business in 1998 Nicky trained for ministry on the
Diocesan Ministry Course and was ordained deacon at Michaelmas 2002 and priested
in 2003.
Her Christian faith had its roots in a Church of England primary school education
and contact with fellow Christians but it was tested and strengthened through personal
experience of cancer. The illness opened new windows for her and she felt she
wanted to help and encourage others undergoing similar experiences. She now works
as an Ordained Local Minister alongside Nigel and in August 2006 was appointed chaplain
at Aldeburgh Hospital. Her 'day job' is as book-keeper, and she also works as
technical assistant to husband Nick, who runs an electron-microscopy business at
Rendlesham. Any spare time is spent singing, trying to keep the garden under control,
and hill walking in Scotland whenever the opportunity arises!
