Baptism

and walk with Christ your whole life through

The idea is that when your child becomes old enough to understand faith for themselves, they can confirm what you have said on their behalf in a service of Confirmation.    They can only do that if you see baptism as just the first step on a journey of faith.

Baptism is “the entrance to the Christian life”, which is why many churches symbolically have the font close to the main entrance door.  Sometimes it is called Christening, which literally means “Christian-making”.   Baptisms happen during Family Services on the first Sunday of a month at 10.30 am.

In the baptism service parents and Godparents declare their own Christian faith and make promises on behalf of your child, to live in the light of Christ, and to bring up your child as a Christian within the life of the church.

The promises are not to be taken lightly.   If you decide that you would like your child baptised, we will help you to understand what they mean.  Baptism means the beginning of what should be a long and happy relationship with our church and we want to do everything we can to support you both before and after the baptism.

We expect you in turn to make every effort to be involved in the life of the church both before and after, and part of this will mean coming to Family Services and other special services designed with children and families in mind.   There is also, for pre-school children, First Steps.

Once you have been to at least two Family Services we can begin to talk through the possibility of baptism for your child.  If you need further information or would like to get in touch, please contact Nigel or Nichola in the first place.

Baptism is an important step in the life of your child.   By asking the church to help you take this step in the presence of God you are entering into a commitment on behalf of your child which is life-long.
