there are no HR requirements for staff employed by a local group, to whom contracts would be transferred.  That doesn’t seem to follow!

Pertinently someone asked, “Where do we get books from assuming we can afford the petrol to get there? What are they going to do about Ian and all the lovely staff?”   The worth of Ian and the lovely staff was affirmed but it was something that would be returned to later.  Helpful and knowledgeable about their local area though they are, they are good deliverers of the service but not professional librarians, we were told.

But then we came to the heart of it.   SCC had already taken the decision that £2.1 million had to be saved by cuts.  At the moment libraries are in the firing line.  “What I think is unlikely to change is the amount of saving that has to be made.  So alternatives that come back to the Council ought to show how the money might be saved differently.”

So, assuming that the Town Council or another body will have to run the library, would we have to man the library, organise and manage it, and raise funds to pay for it?  Please clarify.   The answer was long but the message simple.   Yes, 30% of the costs had to be saved for SCC to consider libraries viable.

How could this be achieved?   Brian Prettyman drew a distinction between the building and the library service.   “The library could continue in different location.”  Because of the age and design of the building it is not as fuel efficient as modern buildings so something might have to be done to make it so or else it could be vacated.
