Nigel, so sorry and saddened to read on teletext this evening about the bells.  Why do a few have to try and take away the pleasure that so many more appreciate and enjoy?   Where I live in Norfolk the church has only 1 bell - so you can imagine how much I missed the beautiful sound of 8.   Just as when people move to the countryside they must expect to hear cockerels and other farm animals  (and  expect there to be smells!), others who buy properties near churches must expect to hear bells!   The next thing they will want to stop is the waves crashing when there is a bracing easterly wind: King Canute could not do it so I do not think they will!   Perhaps they would be better off in the midst of nowhere (or as they say in Suffolk in the back of beyond).

Church bells are part of our heritage, of which we should be proud but are losing too much.  After all, it is not as though they are rung every Sunday afternoon, is it?

No, these people should be grateful and appreciate God's gift of hearing - there are a lot of people who wish they could, and would be only too pleased to be able, to hear; they should also appreciate the talent that goes into making the bells and the talent of ringing them.

I was so dismayed that I wanted to send best wishes in what I imagine will be a fight.
