Bells and Bellringers

The five bells numbered 3 – 7 were recast by the Barron Bell Trust, 1960  Emma Barron, founder  HW Eldred, KC Walron, ER Pennell - trustees

In fact we have “one over the eight” (is that where that phrase comes from?!) because we also have priest’s bell made in 1812 and recast in 1990 but in recognition of the fact that priests past and present need it to be so it weighs only 1.75 cwt!

We are very fortunate to have such an expert band of ringers drawn from across Suffolk.   Two members of our band, including Richard Rapior our Tower Captain, are members of the prestigious Ancient Society of College Youths.   Our bells and our bell-ringers can now say that they have been heard across the world.

On the previous page is a table of the bells, their weights, inscriptions and notes.   You will see that the lightest, the treble, weighs 3.17 cwt and the heaviest weighs 11.68 cwt.   You can see why the tower needs to be so strong!    They are rung in a full circle and that takes considerable practice and skill.

On the next page George Pipe, Past Master of the Suffolk Guild of Ringers, explains the mystery of a Peal.
